Plan and develop pre-production materials (U3 : P3, M2)
Learning Outcome 2 (U3) : Be able to plan and develop pre-production materials for an original media product to a client brief.
Model release form :
A model release form grants the magazine company the right to use photographs taken of the models within the magazine without any legal issues that could come up.
Location release form :
Location release form allows the production team to access a location site that the photoshoot is at and be able to release the pictures taken at that scene.
Risk assessment :
A risk assessment form outlines possible health and safety risks that could occur on set and are noted down so the team can avoid these issues.
Recce of location :
Recce of location checks the appropriateness of the grounds that the photoshoot is taken at; it is also beneficial that I check in advance so the team is aware of the site.
Call sheet :
A call sheet document schedules every model for everyday that they will be on set and allows the photographer to know exactly where everyone is meant to be and at what time.
Gantt chart :
Mood board :
Colour scheme : My colour scheme towards my magazine will include pinks and reds to conform to the genre of romance. However it will also include blues and greens to emphasise Christmas. As well as this I will have neutral colours like white and black so my magazine has a professional outlook towards it.
Fonts styles :
This font will be used for my cover-lines due to its name being 'Romance'. This font is simple yet elegant.
This font will be used as my body copy of my magazine. This font looks fancy yet does not make any pages look overcrowded or messy and thus the readers will be able to read the articles easily.
Hand drawn sketches :
These are my hand drawn sketches of my magazine which show layouts, content ideas and coverlines.
Copyright - Copyright allows the owner to protect their work against others trying to copy or reproduce it. Specifically with my magazine, copyright will also prevent others from copying any ideas within my magazine and if this has been breached legal actions would take place; such as a fine. Therefore any content I use must be my own and if I choose to use someone else's, permission must be granted with a written and verbal acceptance. I also must ensure the models within my photographs are not wearing branded clothes as this would break the Copyright Act. However, I can gain permission from a copyright owner or designer if I chose to include branded clothing within my magazine photos. Lastly, to resolve any legal issues that I may face, I will continue to ask for consent from the owners or I can also use royalty free sites for images or fonts that I want within my product.
Deformation - Deformation emphasises the law of legal action that can take place if a reader is given false information or details that could harm them in any way. An example of this, is releasing an interview with a film star and publishing information that could possibly ruin her or his career. It is crucial that my magazine does not break this as it could lead to fines or even court meetings; that perhaps my company cannot afford. To make sure that I do not break this law, I have hired a journalist who has a clear understanding of the rules that surround publishing magazines; including the content that can be presented.
Location Permissions - Location permissions refers to a document being created and signed by an owner of a property that my company would like to shoot our photos at; whether it be in public or private. The reason behind requesting permission to be on the set is so my company would not face any lawsuits that could then affect the timeline of creating my final product. This also can tarnish their reputation as they have been included in a project they have no idea about. Similarly, this could affect our reputation as readers may not want to purchase a magazine that breaches multiple laws. Although, this could easily be solved by a location permission form that would be signed legally; thus stopping any issues further down the creation process.
Ethical issues :
Discrimination - Discrimination is when someone is not included or treated differently based on different circumstances; for example race, ethnicity, sex or gender. In order to avoid this I will hire people that are in all categories. This means I can hire my journalists, editors, models and photographers that are in different ethnicities, genders and religions. Discrimination can lead to having a bad reputation for my magazine which would lead to readers avoiding my product; which would make my magazine unsuccessful and I am keen to avoid this.
Health and Safety - Health and Safety means that my set and atmosphere during the production development needs to be a safe environment for all staff and employees; whilst making sure they don't encounter danger during working hours. My magazine could be effected if any staff or employees get harmed as it would slow down the production development and I could also get sued. By protecting my staff and ensure they work in an healthy environment, it will reduce absences and lead to more work being done. I will order a safety check on a regular basis and also make sure a first aid box will be on site.
Editorial bias - Editorial bias refers to situations where someone or something can influence the editors decisions when producing the magazines articles. This could affect my magazine as the information produced in my magazine can come out to be against certain people in the public. For example, if an article is written and makes a comment that discriminates a certain group it can lead to readers becoming angry and then complaining about my magazine. This means my magazine could become very unsuccessful and I would lose income. This could be avoided by hiring a knowledgeable journalist that will ensure that the content within my magazine does not become bias to anyone.
