Create a proposal and pitch for a media product (P1,P2,M1,U3&P2,U21)

Learning Outcome 1 (U3) : Be able to create a proposal with sample materials for an original media product to a client brief.

Learning Outcome 2 (U21) : Be able to create a proposal and pitch for an original media product based on a given brief.

Name : My magazine will have the masthead of 'True Romance' as it conforms to the genre of romance. This will appeal instantly towards the readers as the stereotypical outlook on love is the idea that everyone will have a true love at some points in their life.

Purpose : Magazines are created for consumer satisfaction, thus the main focus is to inform and entertain readers. My purpose of my magazine will be linked to the theory of 'Uses and Gratifications' by Blumer and Katz. Meaning that the motive behind my magazine will be so consumers can turn to media for a chance of escapism and i will do this by the unique content within the magazine; which will also keep my readers loyal. This will be illustrated through an insight on the new independent movies for the romantic genre. Allowing the promotion of the upcoming movie within my magazine will give my readers a chance to enter an alternate reality, therefore i will produce interesting articles, images, Q&As, interactive competitions and interviews. As i have made clear, the issue of my magazine I will produce next will be a special edition surrounding the Christmas holidays. The use of including a holiday magazine will be in order for my readers to buy and enjoy something while they are off school or work and will have time to sit down and enjoy a classic romance being portrayed in the Christmas time.

Form  : The magazine will be provided in both a hard copy and digital form. This would give the opportunity for the readers to choose their personal preference on how they would like to read.

A hard copy of the magazine will include 60 pages, including the front and back cover. This will be including interviews from the film stars, advertisement of new upcoming independent romance films, information about the genre and promoting new subscriptions to Netflix and the companies new streaming service : Attraction.  The type of paper being used will be an uncoated paper as this is far more environmentally friendly, than a glossy copy, thus once readers are finished they may recycle my magazine. By doing this it will promote an ethical advantage surrounding my magazine. The subscriptions of this hard copy will depend on the consumers personal choice. One choice will be - £35.99 yearly, which gives you two months free subscription. As it is aimed at younger readership, who are perhaps reliant on pocket money rather than income (disposable income) the price should be reflective of the demographic, thus the other choice will be - £3.50 per month which can be cancelled at any point.

An online copy will be extremely similar to the hard copy, meaning any information or interviews that are shown in the physical copy will also be included within the online magazine. However, the online magazine will be featured on a website and in the website there will be an exclusive video of the new trailer to the upcoming North London Christmas romance movie, as well as an interview with main protagonists. The subscriptions to the online version will be also dependent on personnel choice. Similarly to the hard copy, due to the readers disposable incomes the costs of the subscription annually will be £25.99 with the first two months free and £2.50 monthly, which can conveniently be cancelled at any point of the year.

Genre of the product : I am producing a genre based magazine. I have chosen to produce this type of magazine because it reaches a mass audience, those who are fans of romance films. This will perfectly link to my target audience of 13-24 year olds as they would want more insight surrounding the love genre and how their favourite type of films get produced and released; which will all be included in my magazine. Additionally, as the Christmas special will be released it will reach a wider audience as those who love traditional Christmas movies may also want to read the magazine. This links to the brief as it allows to produce new independent movies specifically from this genre.

Content : In order to attract customers to my magazines I will need to make the magazine stand out in terms of looks and content. As the magazine will be sold in shops, with other magazines around, mine must be attractive in order to lure consumers towards my product. To make mine stand out, cover-lines must read the enticing content within the pages of my magazine. Some ideas for interesting articles can include; interviews, Q&As, reviews, Top 10s and interactive chapters. My target audience will love to read about the romance genre - gaining a sense of personal identity. Along with this, reviews will allow my readers to form opinions; thus can be anything from reviews from past romance films to opinions on North London actors. Another idea could be 'Top 10s', here readers can see how films from the past have been ranked and they can form opinions on whether they agree with the lists or not. All these content ideas will contribute to my magazine because as the client brief states we need to entertain readers and I have done so by the content chosen. Moreover, each successful magazine has a USP to ensure their magazine strives therefore I have thought of two that may do so. My target audience are fully aware of technology thus my unique selling points include phones and websites. I have created two USP depending on if the reader is a subscriber to my magazine.  One USP - that is available to all readers - will be a behind the scenes experience through an electronic device, where videos and documentaries will be shown of the filming process and how the new independent film came to be. The second USP - which is available to subscribers only - is a scannable QR code which will allow you to enter a competition to win a 'day in a life' on a film set for new movies that are currently being filmed in North London. By having QR codes to reach the content of the USP, it will emphasise that the consumers can enroll in a form of escapism and entertainment. I am confident that this will help me beat any other competitors in North London.

Target audience :

Primary - The main age that I will be targeting will be 13-18, this is consequently as some of the content within my magazine is directed more to those who have social media and are actively involved with it. In addition, this age range are very interested (especially females) in love and romance and they see all this through social media, by watching actors fall in love or characters falling in love. Moreover, the main class audience are C2B, due to the price being affordable for those who may have disposable incomes as they are teenagers they may not have sustainable jobs with a sustainable income. My magazine also will be aimed to any race and ethnicity; it is not specific to one.

Secondary - The age range that this magazine would also be targeting are 18-24, this is because they may be in University and by reading my magazine can allow them to disconnect from their stress of work and could possibly inform while entertain. This age range are also into social media, possibly having owned dating apps or following actors from previous romance films, therefore they may be interested in reading my magazine. In addition, the secondary class audience are C1A, as the price is affordable for those apart of the C1 category. As well as, consumers from A categories will also be able to afford the magazine and maybe a subscription. Similarly, the race or ethnicity for my magazine is directed at everyone; not singling
anyone out.

Distribution and marketing methods : The uses of marketing is to gain consumer interests and this will be achieved through marketing products directly aimed towards your target audience. My magazine will be distributed on social media platforms due to my young target audience who are very likely to be connected within the social media world and also because the client requires online copies of my magazine. I could do this by posting 'sneak peeks' of nearly released articles which will be present in my new magazines. This will most definitely entice my consumers as it will make them want to buy next editions; as well as perhaps following our social media platforms to then further hear new updates. Another way to market the film that will be released within my magazine is by entering film festivals - as it says in the client brief. During the festival, which will be the 'BFI London Film Festival,' I will hand out free flyers that promote my magazine in order to attract consumers to my entire company's project. By doing so, it will inform people about my magazine which my also then by passed onto a wider readership, which then will rise my sales.

Furthermore, distribution is an action that involves placing a product somewhere that can be consumed by the pubic eye. My magazine will be placed in typical, local North London shops due to my target audience being directed towards a younger readership and they tend to go to places such as : newsagents, cinemas, supermarkets and shopping centres. I will do this as the public will see my product quite often as it will be in areas that is close to their home and will be places that my target audience enjoy going to. Within shopping centres, I will ask shops' permission to hang posters of my magazines within their stores. By placing posters and physical copies of my magazine within local areas; it will allow people to engage with my product and may further attract them to a subscription with the magazine.

Resources and personnel : In order to make the production of my final magazine I will need range of resources and personnel to make this happen.

Font styles :

This font will be used as the masthead of my magazine due to its bold and somewhat professional layout. My target audience will be drawn to the title due to its boldness and eye captivating look.

This font will be used for my cover-lines due to its name being 'Romance'. This font is simple yet elegant, thus will match the genre of romance.

This font will be used as my body copy of my magazine. This font looks fancy yet does not make any pages look overcrowded or messy and thus the readers will be able to read the articles easily.

Colour scheme : My colour scheme towards my magazine will include pinks and reds to conform to the genre of romance. However it will also include blues and greens to emphasise Christmas. As well as this I will have neutral colours like white and black so my magazine has a professional outlook towards it.
Here are some examples :

Direct competition :

My magazine does not have too much competition as other romantic movie magazines are basing their materials on movies made in Hollywood and staring Hollywood actors. 'Entertainment' uses very famous celebrities, thus this would be distributed all around America due to its high statuses. It is very unlikely you would see this magazine distributed around areas of North London. However, the magazine 'Exposure' is a direct competition as it is a genre based magazine located in North London; exactly where my magazines would be marketed. As it is also genre based people may be attracted to this magazine over mine - creating competition.
